Developed Navies such as the United States Navy and Royal Navy established the Sea, Air and Land (SEAL) Force and the Special Boat Service (SBS) respectively, to boost their capabilities in the maritime environment. These specialized Naval components are designed to confront a wide variety of situations ranging from peacetime threats to open warfare. Besides the future policy direction, the Nigerian Navy takes cognizance of the growing importance of the Gulf of Guinea in the socio-economic well being of Nigeria and the international community. This is because the discovery of oil deposits in far offshore such as the Bonga, Agbami, Ekoli and Akpo in Nigeria, which are at distance of not less than 120 nautical miles from any of the Nigerian Navy bases and the global trend in oil market, poses very serious security challenges to Nigeria. These challenges therefore necessitated the transformation of the Nigerian Navy towards attaining the capability of providing the required security in the nation’s maritime environment.
This prompted the Nigerian Navy to promulgate the Nigerian Navy Order (NNO) 07/06. This NNO metamorphosed into the Nigerian Navy Social Boat Service (NNSBS). The Navy Special Forces, the world over, wears combat rigs I form of camouflage and other counter terrorist outfit. Presently, the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service is compromised of counterterrorist teams, snipers and diving experts as well as Airborne operators. Most of the operatives were trained in Isreal, Pakistan and Jaji in Kaduna State. During the military era, a team of Special Boat Service personnel from NNS PATHFINDER were deployed for salvage operations.
